SOL (Star of the Seas)

Created for Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas, SOL follows the sun’s journey from sunrise to sunset through extreme skating, immersive projections, theatrical lighting, and one of Royal Caribbean’s largest ice-skating casts.

SOL is an original ice production aboard Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas inspired by the movement of the sun across the sky. Beginning at sunrise and traveling through the changing colors and energy of the day toward sunset, the production combines extreme skating, theatrical storytelling, immersive projection, and large-scale visual effects.

The production features what Royal Caribbean describes as its largest ice-skating cast, performing within the technologically advanced Absolute Zero venue. The combination of high-speed skating and immersive media creates an environment in which the arena itself becomes part of the visual experience.

As Lighting Designer, Lighting Programmer, and BlackTrax Programmer, Samuel Doty designed the lighting environment and programmed the production while integrating performer tracking throughout the show. BlackTrax allows lighting and other technical elements to respond to the movement of the skaters, helping synchronize the production’s lighting, projection, and performance elements.
