Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical
Costume Designer · Off-Broadway · Playhouse 46 at St. Luke’s · 2022–2023
Overview
Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical is a high-camp musical send-up of Stranger Things, transporting audiences to Hawkins, Indiana in 1983 through ’80s nostalgia, pop-culture references and heightened theatrical comedy.
The musical returned Off-Broadway in 2022 at Playhouse 46 at St. Luke’s, directed by Nick Flatto with choreography by Ashley Marinelli, and extended its run through May 2023.
Critical Reception
“The costumes do the best work of paying tribute to the show’s original look and feel.”— Theatrely
“Matthew Solomon’s costumes and hair design… capture the familiar look of the era and the array of identifiable characters and strange creatures from the TV series.”— DC Theater Arts
“Transitions are assisted by Matthew Solomon's canny costume and hair design, in which wigs evoke the era's tonsorial excess.” (New York Stage Review)
Contribution
Matthew Solomon served as Costume Designer for the 2022 Off-Broadway return, creating a new wardrobe rooted in recognizable 1980s silhouettes while pushing the characters into the heightened visual language of parody. The design balanced period references, quick changes, supernatural creatures and exaggerated character comedy.
The Off-Broadway production was also professionally captured in 4K, preserving Solomon’s theatrical costume design for its subsequent filmed release.
