No Strings
Costume Designer · Off-Broadway · Theatre Row · 2020
Overview
No Strings is Richard Rodgers’ sophisticated 1962 musical set against the world of high fashion in Paris. The story follows Barbara Woodruff, a successful American model, and David Jordan, an expatriate writer, as their romance unfolds across Europe.
J2 Spotlight Musical Theater Company presented the rarely revived musical at Theatre Row, directed and choreographed by Deidre Goodwin, with Keyonna Knight and Cameron Bond leading the company.
Critical Reception
“While the show has outdone itself on the costuming… Matthew Solomon’s costumes are a veritable haute couture collection both for the fashion models and the other characters.”— TheaterScene.net
Contribution
Matthew Solomon served as Costume Designer, creating a wardrobe rooted in the sophisticated fashion world of early-1960s Paris.
The design combined couture-inspired silhouettes, period tailoring and elevated day and evening wear, while using the production’s fashion models to bring the world of French high fashion directly into the staging.
