Nancy Kerrigan’s Halloween on Ice
Costume Designer and Music Editor · Touring Ice Production · 2015
Overview
Nancy Kerrigan’s Halloween on Ice is a legacy figure-skating production combining championship skating with theatrical storytelling, choreography, music, and Halloween characters.
Revived in 2015 after a five-year hiatus, the production toured 15 cities across the United States and Canada. Nancy Kerrigan, Jerry Solomon, and Kurt Browning collaborated on the show’s creation and choreography, developing a family-friendly theatrical world populated by witches, vampires, ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural characters.
Contribution
Matthew Solomon served as Costume Designer, creating three principal costumes for Nancy Kerrigan built around a series of theatrical transformations. Kerrigan opened the production disguised as an elderly woman before revealing a pink princess costume on the ice. Near the end of Act I, the layered design transformed once more as Kerrigan emerged as the Queen of the Vampires.
Solomon also designed Alex Murphy’s devilish Red Riding Hood character and a featured witches ensemble worn by Kerrigan, Murphy, Nicole Bobek, Kim Navarro, and Alissa Czisny. The costumes combined individual character identities with a cohesive group palette while addressing the movement, balance, visibility, layering, and rapid-change requirements of professional skating.
In addition to his costume work, Solomon provided music editing for the production’s opening and selected programs performed by Kerrigan and Murphy, helping shape the timing and dramatic progression of the show.
