A Day in Hollywood, A Night in Ukraine
Costume Designer · Off-Broadway · Theatre Row · 2022
Overview
A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine is a two-part musical comedy celebrating the Golden Age of Hollywood. The first act pays tribute to classic movie musicals, while the second transforms Chekhov’s The Bear into a madcap Marx Brothers-style farce.
J2 Spotlight Musical Theater Company presented the first New York revival since the musical’s original Broadway production, directed by Robert W. Schneider and choreographed by Deidre Goodwin.
Critical Reception
“A heartfelt production. Humorous, upbeat, and well choreographed with opulent sets and costumes and romantic lighting. A real BROADWAY quality.”— Times Square Chronicles
Contribution
Matthew Solomon served as Costume Designer, creating two distinct visual worlds: the polished glamour of Hollywood’s Golden Age and the heightened period comedy of the Marx Brothers-inspired second act. The wardrobe supported extensive dance and tap choreography while allowing the company to transform between the musical’s two contrasting halves.
